MINNEAPOLIS–(BUSINESS WIRE)–HistoSonics, the developer of the Edison® Histotripsy System and novel histotripsy therapy platform, today announced a management-led majority stake acquisition by a syndicate of globally recognized private and public investors, including K5 Global, Bezos Expeditions, Wellington Management and other new and existing investors. The transaction values HistoSonics at approximately $2.25 billion and positions the company for accelerated growth of the Edison System across new clinical indications and global markets.

What is HistoSonics?

HistoSonics is a medical device company that pioneered histotripsy—a non-invasive, focused ultrasound technology that mechanically destroys unwanted tissue at a sub-cellular level. Founded in 2009 based on research from the University of Michigan, the company is headquartered in Ann Arbor and Plymouth, Michigan. They’ve raised $300M in venture funding, including a $102M Series D round in 2024.

It’s Called the Edison Histotripsy System

  • Edison System: A sophisticated, robotically assisted platform delivering pulsed sound energy to liquefy targeted tumors without surgery or heat.
  • Mechanism: Ultrasound-induced acoustic cavitation forms microbubble clouds that collapse in microseconds, mechanically destroying tissue—preserving critical structures like blood vessels and bile ducts.

Milestones

  • FDA Approval:
    • Received Breakthrough Device Designation (2021).
    • Granted De Novo clearance in October 2023 for treating liver tumors.
  • HOPE4LIVER Trials:
    • Treated 47 patients across multiple centers; 95.5% achieved complete tumor coverage.
    • 12-month follow-up reported a 90% local tumor control rate with minimal complications.
  • HOPE4KIDNEY Trial:
    • Clinical treatments underway for kidney tumors; first procedure performed in Florida (2024).
  • Other Indications:
    • Active efforts are underway to expand histotripsy into treating pancreatic tumors and potentially other solid tumors or benign conditions like fibroids and enlarged prostates.
