DESCRIBED:
The Coalition for Global Hepatitis Elimination is a nonprofit founded in 2019 as a program of The Task Force for Global Health. The Coalition pursues worldwide elimination of viral hepatitis by strengthening capacity at the local level, bringing together global partners to share knowledge, data, and experiences related to hepatitis prevention, testing, and care and treatment. The Coalition also strengthens the evidence base to support countries with the greatest hepatitis burden by spearheading new research and developing novel technical assistance resources. Finally, the Coalition mobilizes commitment to build awareness and urgency around the importance of hepatitis elimination from public and policy stakeholders.
The Task Force for Global Health, founded 40 years ago to advance health equity, works with partners in more than 150 countries to eliminate diseases, ensure access to vaccines and essential medicines, and strengthen health systems to protect populations. WHY ELIMINATE VIRAL HEPATITIS
In 2022, viral hepatitis and tuberculosis were the second leading causes of death among communicable diseases, after COVID-19 (1). Mortality from hepatitis B virus (HBV) and hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection are increasing and caused an estimated 1.3 million deaths in 2022, compared to 1.1 million deaths in 2019. Approximately 304 million persons are living with HBV or HCV infection and an estimated 2.2 million new chronic infections occur annually (1).
WHAT WE DO
The Coalition is working towards the acceleration of hepatitis B and C elimination by strengthening the capacity of national and sub-national elimination programs through advocacy, technical assistance, research, knowledge generation and dissemination among partners united in a community of practice.
The three strategic areas of CGHE are:
- Connecting and supporting programs: Connect programs in a Community of Practice to facilitate peer learning and support programs with evidence-based tools, technical assistance, and strategies that build local capacity to prevent, diagnose, and treat hepatitis.
- Building the evidence base: Build the evidence base by updating existing hepatitis elimination data and tools, spearheading data analyses and new research, and developing new technical assistance tools.
- Mobilizing commitment: Mobilize commitment for global hepatitis elimination among public and policy stakeholders in partnership with civil society, advocacy organizations, and other critical partners around the world to build awareness, instill urgency, and secure funding for elimination
