America's Liver Transplant Footprint
In 2024, there will be about 11,000 liver transplants in America across 152 centers for adult patients. And there are ~17,000 people on the waitlist for a liver transplant.
Some 94% of liver transplants use whole livers from deceased donors, while 5% use partial livers from living donors. Livers are allocated based on a patient’s MELD score, with sicker patients receiving priority. The liver transplant policy prioritizes patients who are closest to the donor hospital.
